In New Mexico Gerry was active with our Property Owners Association, serving 2 years as president. Gerry & Cindy volunteered time and materials to install culverts on the roads and install gates in the fence lines so hikers and horses could pass through. We drove the roads after every storm to access the damage, fixing what we could and calling in the grader as needed. We pulled our neighbors to safety, saving their Jeep when he tried to cross an arroyo during a storm. We maintained waterers for livestock and antelope in different areas of the ranch. We helped owners locate their survey markers, and provided general help to whoever needed it; including taking delivery of our neighbor?s manufactured home while they were on a cruise. We volunteered on cattle roundups several times a year, herding cows, sorting, and helping in the pens with inoculations and branding. Cindy volunteered her time to print and mail invoices, file liens, and research the tax records for owners. Cindy also put out a newsletter, maintained the POA website, and sent all meeting notices. Cindy received all POA mail, making bank deposits, forwarding mail for the officers to answer, and maintaining a database of owners.
In 2008 we moved to Mission, TX. Gerry has been involved with the Home Owners Association, serving one year as President. Gerry and Cindy have planned, cooked and served meals for the community, planned and hosted activities such as Make It & Take It, wine tastings, cruises, started a beginner quilting group, held a mailbox design contest, and formed a snorkeling activity. We also participate in many other park activities. Gerry was responsible for getting quotes and selecting a contractor for 2 construction projects in the park.
Gerry is very active with the VFW. He serves on the Honor Guard for funerals, serving as commander of the honor guard as needed. Gerry and Cindy plan, create the program, and host the Marine Corps Birthday Ball each November 10th. Gerry smokes turkey and we prepare and serve Thanksgiving dinner to about 50 veterans at the VFW every Thanksgiving. Cindy is active in the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW; running the cookbook drive, and donating food, time and money to various causes throughout the year.
