Safe Harbor Farm

by Laurie Stockwell
(North Carolina)

NC: Animal lovers needed at Safe Harbor Farm. Safe Harbor Farm is a 61-acre animal sanctuary adjacent to the beautiful Croatan National Forest in Maysville, NC. It is staffed almost entirely by volunteers

Its mission is to rescue adoptable dogs and cats from high-kill municipal shelters in the region, spay or neuter them in the on-site clinic, and provide other necessary medical care. They are groomed, given good nutrition, and lots of one-on-one attention.

The animals are then made available for adoption in carefully-screened "forever" homes. Any dog or cat that is not adopted lives out its life in safety and security on the property.

There are four full hookup RV sites on the property. Wi-fi and free use of the laundry are included. In return, Safe Harbor Farm requests twenty hours of volunteer work per week.

Job opportunities include hands-on animal care (feeding, grooming, dog walking and training, etc.), gardening, landscaping, simple carpentry, painting, and helping with adoption events on the weekends. Sometimes it's just taking the big dogs to the beach (30 minutes away) for a romp and a chance to socialize.

Help is always welcome in the on-site spay neuter clinic, or simply with cleaning kennels and food bowls.

My husband and I have volunteered at the Farm on several occasions. We find the atmosphere joyful, upbeat, and cheerful. And it feels great to help save a few small lives that otherwise had no chance.
