(Volunteer Position Fisheries Enhancement and Fishery Education Programs)

OR: Morgan Creek Hatchery, Coos Bay, Oregon. Morgan Creek Hatchery is operated by South Coast Anglers/STEP, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to fisheries enhancement and fishery education programs.


The hatchery host position is at Morgan Creek Hatchery, located in rural Coos County, OR approximately 10 mi East of Coos Bay along Morgan Creek, a tributary of the Coos River.

South Coast Anglers (SCA) is also a part of the statewide SalmonTrout Enhancement Program (STEP). Morgan Creek Hatchery raises salmon as a supplement to the wild salmon population and to provide more local angling opportunity. All Morgan Creek Hatchery projects are under the supervision of the State of Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife.

Morgan Creek Hatchery, over the past 30+ yrs, has expanded and improved it operations to the point that it is now recognized statewide as one of the very best in  modern hatchery practices and production. As such, Morgan Creek Hatchery is highly valued throughout the local community and the angling public around the state. All of this could have only been accomplished through the hard work and donations of many community volunteers.

The position of hatchery host is an ODFW volunteer (unpaid). This position requires signing an agreement regarding expectations and responsibilities. The hatchery host is expected to reside at Morgan Creek Hatchery due to the 24/7 aspect of the host duties. The hatchery host must provide their own living quarters such as a travel trailer or motorhome that is suitable for long term occupancy. A concrete pad & hookups are provided. This voluneteer position will share work duties with 2 or more other hatchery hosts. The nature of the work duties and hatchery operation require at least one hatchery host on duty at all times. Hatchery host duties will include ) but are not restricted to the following: general facilities maintenance, outside maintenance, feeding, care and protection of hatchery fish, participation in fin marking and spawning of hatchery fish, supervising other volunteers, and providing public hatchery tours. A hatchery host will need to develop a keen interest in and  knowledge of hatchery operations. This position is very demanding but also very enjoyable and rewarding for the right person.
