Mystery State Park

by Ralph Stukenberg
(Folkston, Ga )

We got our start in Illinois at a state park that has a big statue, has about 80 electric sites, and tent sites. At most any given time it is usually full on week-ends. Most of the campers are locals, but many also are from many miles from the area.

The staff people are very nice. There is a very nice town close by with many stores to make everyone feel we/come.

We hosted there for four years and really did not want to leave. But, our dream was to travel, and to see other parts of the USA.

We are hoping to return to that park in spring of 2011, because we miss the people and the park. Also how well it's kept so clean, something hard to find in private parks.

Reveal the Mystery
by: Coleen, the RVing editor

Hi Ralph,

A clean park with friendly staff. It's easy to see why it could be your favorite.

Please don't keep it a secret! Hit the comment button below and let your fellow RVers know the name of the park. If you have a website address or park contact info, that would be helpful, too.

And, if you have a picture of you in the park that you could add, that would be super.

Illinois State Park - Lowden State Park
by: Anonymous

The state park is in northern Illinois. It's called Lowden State Park. It has a 50-foot statue a Blackhawk Indian that overlooks the Rock River. In 2011, they are planning a big celebration for his 100th birthday. He has watched over the town of Oregon, Ill., all these years now!

And for the railroad buffs, there is a depot. The south end of the town and/or 20 miles southeast of Oregon, Ill., is a town called Rochelle, Ill., which has railroad park. It has a very nice pavilion to set or stand. Also has a railroad hobby store. Nice parking lot. Two main line tracks go by the pavilion on a diamond track just to the west. One line is BNSF the other is Union Pacific. A person can almost touch the train as it goes by.

IL St. Park Volunteer Info

Here is the website with information on volunteering with the Illinois Department of Natural Resourses at Illinois State Parks. Both an application and the volunteer camphost handbook are posted on the site.
