Camp Workers

by Melvena (Mel) Allen

Easter at Schulenburg RV Park

Easter at Schulenburg RV Park

We are the Allens, camp workers Eddie and Mel, from Garden City, KS. This is our first full year as full time RVer's and workampers. We are having a great time and highly recommend it to others. We are so glad we decided to retire and not wait another three years.

Last summer, we worked at Newport, TN, at the KOA. The KOA has great owners, Bert and Gini Bockoven, and we had a great time.

This winter, we have worked at Schulenburg RV Park, in Schulenburg, TX. Our fellow camp workers are great and we are all preparing to move on to others places to work camp this summer. We are planning to stay in touch as we all had such fun together.

Schulenburg RV Park is a wonderful little park with 49 well kept sites with 30/50 amps, full hookups, and pull thru sites. Owner Loretta Baumgarten and her daughter Holly run the park and are really nice people to work for. Everyone they had signed up for this summer as work campers has canceled out on them. Camp workers receive full hook up, back in site, wifi, cable, propane, and laundry, if anyone is interested.

We are headed to Dubois, WY, to work as camp host for Wind River KOA until the last of September. We are so looking forward to working longterm in the area and seeing things we just flew by 10-11 years ago.

We are looking for some place to camp work this fall-winter 2009-10, near Casa Grande, AZ. My brother retired there. He joined the Navy my freshman year of high school and has been gone my entire adult life, so I wanted to spend some time near him while we both are in excellent health.

Eddie and I are both in good health. Eddie is 66 and I am 63.

We have three living children Shari, Larry, and Garry; with spouses, Kendall, Pat, and Lauri; and five grandchildren, Levi, Jenna, Garrett, Jonathan, and Micaila. All but one live in Garden City, KS. Our grandson Levi lives in Dumas, TX.

We both have worked in customer service oriented areas our entire professional lives.

Mel: Banking Customer Service; Trucking Industry Dock Manager, Dispatcher, and Receptionist; Plumbing Contractor Sec/Recpt/Dispatcher (I was the only on there who had seven bosses). I worked with computers and other office machines most of the time. At the plumbing contractor, I took care of all the office machines. I am familiar with MS Word, MS Excel, Timberline Sage, and other computer applications.

Eddie: Industrial Equipment Shop Manager, Service Manager, Equipment Sales, and Store Manager; Certified JCB Equipment Mechanic. Eddie is knowledgeable about all kinds of equipment and service. He is certified to fill propane tanks. He has experience with some electrical and plumbing problem.

Our Work Camper Experience at Three Rivers RV Park
by: Ron Westfall

My wife Beverly and I are leaving Three Rivers RV Park in Del Rio, TX due to failing health. We have been here for the last 16 months. This was our second time around working for the Hinostrosas, owners of Three Rivers.

Anyone looking for a workcamper position should check them out. I guarantee you will never find finer people to work for. If I was able, I wouldn't leave. I feel like this is my second home.

I see comments about bad experiences with RV parks and owners. Our experience has always been positive.

We hate to leave. The Hinostrosas are generous, caring, and very flexible when dealing with their workers. Thanks for everything Luis and Jerrie. We will miss you.

Advice, Please

Was wondering if you could describe your work camp at the KOA as that is what my wife and I might be interested in.
Thanks.

Your Post Inspired Me!
by: John

I plan to retire from teaching soon. Reading your story has inspired me to plan an earlier retirement. There are good opportunities available. Thank you for sharing your experiences.
