Update from Your RV Workers On Wheels Newsletter Editor

A big welcome to our new subscribers. We are glad to have you with us.

Electric meters held with bungee cords. A manager who overcharges and pockets the extra cash. A campground rec hall regularly turned into a wild booze-it-up party spot. Sounds like just the kind of campgrounds where you'd like to work, right? Well, it just so happens those are the kind of campgrounds some work campers seek. Yes, really. We have a guest article this week by a work camper who rehabilitates campgrounds. It's an interesting story about what they at these parks and why they find it rewarding.

It seems that we are getting another motorhome tomorrow. I have not seen this RV. I hear it is a project. My guess is that Bob's work the next weeks will involve renovating it. I'll keep you posted.

Wherever you are in your work and travels, we wish you joy and prosperity,

Coleen

Rehabilitating Campgrounds and Improving the Campground's Income Stream

Guest article by Patti Hyatt

Rehabilitating campgrounds takes place after there have been management problems. To help you have a better idea of what we do, I will give a few examples of how we help RV parks recover. One campground we regenerated was a repossession by the bank. The borrowers' son was the manager. We were contacted to see if we would be interested in rehabilitating this campground. The bad had moved in; the good was no longer coming or staying. The income stream diminished to result in the repossession.

We went there as though we were normal campers, with no one knowing why, or who we were. We wanted to look like we were just another camping couple coming to enjoy the park.

It didn't take us long to see what the problem was and how it resulted in the downhill slide. The borrowers' son was using the rec room / banquet room to host parties with his friends. Sometimes clean-up was left to the next day. These same friends camped for free and took over the facilities as a party place. The campground's reputation plummeted.

Working RVer Tip

The right time to apply for a job depends on you, and to a lesser degree, on the job you intend to obtain. I'm already hearing from folks who have jobs lined up for the summer of 2013 and who are in contact with employers about the summer of 2014. On the other hand, jobs are available with immediate openings. Many campgrounds are now looking to fill their summer 2012 positions, as well as their winter 2012/2012 openings. When to apply for a job goes from "apply today, start work today" to sending out applications and having a tentative position lined up years in advance.

It's the Time of Year to Be Thinking About Taxes

Just because you camp or RV, taxes and the IRS don't magically disappear from your life. However, living in a recreational vehicle, and/or being a workamper, can mean some employment tax savings.

RVing CPA and Tax Attorney Martin M. Shenkman Shares His Expertise and Advice A CPA and tax attorney can be a huge help to working RVers. Writing for us is tax expert and legal authority, Martin M. Shenkman, CPA, MBA, JD. He is an accountant and lawyer who also RVs. Read his articles on this website.

Employment Taxes -- The IRS Warns It Intends To Collect From Small Businesses Employment taxes affect campgrounds and RV parks just as they do most other small businesses. Workampers may have the idea that they may help at a park, trading labor for campsite, without being an employee. The IRS may see it differently.

Tax Issues with Camper Workers An RV park owner writes, "I have heard that all work campers must be treated as employees and I have a very small, underscore small, RV park in Texas and do not have any employees." Read my reply and comment.

Income Taxes A reader asks, "Do camp workers have to pay any tax?" Read my reply concerning income tax and taxes that would be directly related to working in the campground. And, add your comments and read those of other RVers.

Tax Consequences of Working or Volunteering A reader writes, "My husband and I will be retiring next year. We've been looking into volunteering or working 20-25 hours per week. However, we've heard that many places will send you a 1099 for the value of your campsite when you are a volunteer/work, which increases your taxable income. Is this true?" Read more....

Depreciation On RV An RVer asks, "Can I claim depreciation on a recreational vehicle if the employer requires one for me to work for him? Would there also be other income tax deductions for the RV and related expenses?" Read the replies....
