Update from Your RV Workers On Wheels Newsletter Editor

Voluntourism. I learned a new word last week. A press release that came across my desk defines voluntourism as a travel experience that provides the opportunity to contribute to local community projects and development initiatives with some time off to visit the highlights of that particular destination or country. Sounds to me like the volunteer work camping RVers have been doing for decades.

Speaking of decades, did you know that we've been publishing the Workers On Wheels newsletter for a decade and a half?

Wherever you are in your work and travels, we wish you joy and prosperity, Coleen

Working RVer Tip

Interact With Local Workers

Visit with people who are already doing the kind of work you want to do. Go the places those workers go.

Want to work on a fishing charter? Frequent the marina café, the tackle and bait shops, and the fish cleaning docks.

Working RVer Profile of Lilias and Walter Wheeler: Successful Show Vendors

I watch the presentation Mrs. Wheeler gives and listen to her sales pitch. Then I turn towards Mr. Wheeler and watch as he collects money and hands out the pre-packaged goods to the customers. "I do the work and he takes the money," she quips. This is part of the system the Wheelers use to make their business run smoothly. She shows the product -- effortlessly using the Tartmaster to make sample ravioli, filled cookies, and stuffed pies out of dough.

The Wheelers are actively tending business, demonstrating their wares, and making sales. My interview with Mrs. Wheeler is cut short. My questions are slowing down sales, so I quietly stand nearby and watch.

Your Working While RVing Questions Answered

Sales Tax

~~ A reader asks: Is there a national sales tax number? We will be selling at farmers market and flea markets. We have a state tax number, but is there a nat'l that I don't know about?

~~ I answered in part: There's no national sales tax ID number that covers you for all states.

Each state that you sell in, where you are required to collect sales tax, you need to do it separately for that state. For instance, if you work flea markets in South Dakota, you'd need a SD sales tax permit for that. You'd file the SD report and remit the sales tax you collected while selling there. Then, if you move on to Minnesota, and sell at flea markets there, you'd need a Minnesota sales tax number for that. You'd file the MN report and remit the sales tax you collected from sales there. And, so forth, for every individual state where you go and make sales, providing they have sales tax.

Same Situation – Different Perspectives

How you see the situation depends on which side of the fence you sit. Is the employer doing you a favor by hiring you? Are you doing the employer a favor by working for him?

We started this site after corresponding with thousands of RVers, sharing what we’ve learned from our personal experience as full-time RVers, as well as what we've gleaned from employers and managers who hire and work with work campers and other RV workers.

We do hope we've been instrumental in helping you find the right work situation for your RV lifestyle.

We believe there are many advantages to having an RV home based business that we can take on the road with us. We've found a Watkins Summit Group business works for us.

We are also thankful for SBI!, the "do-all-the-techy-stuff-for-you" e-business building platform that made creating this RV resource site possible.
